Musicality

Music is the soul of Capoeira. It guides the game, carries history, and unites the community in the roda.

The berimbau

The leading instrument of Capoeira. Three types are used: gunga (low), medio (medium), and viola (high). It sets the rhythm and style of play.

The bateria

The full orchestra: three berimbaus, two pandeiros, one atabaque, one agogo, and one reco-reco. Each instrument has its role.

Toques

Different berimbau rhythms such as Angola, Sao Bento Grande, Benguela, and Iuna. Each one indicates a different style of game.

Songs

Ladainhas, corridos, and quadras are sung in Brazilian Portuguese and tell Capoeira history.
