The roda is the beating heart of Capoeira: the circle where capoeiristas gather to play, sing, and celebrate this art.
Roda structure
Participants form a circle. The bateria leads the game. Two players enter to play while the others sing.
The berimbau
A musical bow made from a wooden stick, steel wire, and gourd. It leads the roda and sets the rhythm.
Instruments
Atabaque, pandeiro, agogo, and reco-reco complete the bateria and support the energy of the roda.
Songs
Ladainhas, corridos, and quadras transmit history, values, and energy throughout the game.
